The great blue lake on the Tibetan Plateau
Qinghai Lake, located in Qinghai Province in western China, is the country's largest salt lake and one of the most impressive natural landscapes on the Tibetan Plateau. Surrounded by mountains, prairies and wide open skies, this intensely blue lake offers a sense of vastness and tranquility hard to find elsewhere in China. The region is influenced by Tibetan culture, adding a spiritual and cultural dimension to the trip, with small villages, monasteries and local traditions still very much alive. Travellers can cycle around the lake or drive, watch spectacular sunrises and sunsets, or simply enjoy the landscape and the silence of nature. During summer, the nearby fields fill with flowers, creating a unique contrast with the lake's blue. Due to its altitude, it is advisable to take the journey slowly to adapt, and to bring warm clothing, sun protection and water, as the weather can change rapidly. Qinghai Lake is an ideal destination for those seeking nature, open landscapes and a different experience in the heart of western China.
