Where the desert meets the Silk Road
Ningxia, officially the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, is located in northwestern China, between the Gobi Desert and the Yellow River. It is one of the least-known regions in the country, but with great cultural and scenic richness. Historically it was part of the Silk Road, which made it a point of cultural exchange. Today it stands out for its desert landscapes, ancient fortresses, vineyards and for being home to the Hui community, a Muslim minority that contributes a unique cultural identity to the region.
